August 30, 2010 New Happenings

The premier book signing at The Mix in Greensboro was a hot night and a roaring success. So many friends and followers of The One were there, drinking wine and having fun. We sold 77 copies that night. Thanks to everyone who turned out to support the hometown author!

Sam and Omie's at Nags Head was our second venue for a book signing and we sold 27 copies there. Jakey and Judy Waits, the former owners of S & O's from 30 years ago were there, reminiscing about "Kyle" and purchasing signed copies for friends and family. Thanks to Carole Sykes, current owner, for hosting the event and making us feel like part of the S & O's family...yet again! When Second Time's a Charm comes out we are going back for a reunion!

Books are here!

It is 100 degrees in Greensboro today! The best part about the day was coming back from my walk with Remi and before jumping into the shower, finding eight boxes of books on my doorstep! Only getting married and having children compares with this feeling of satisfaction and excitement. I never thought in November of 2009 when I started writing The One that there would be a day like today, and here it is, just eight months later, I have 200 copies of these beautiful books in my hands. I started out with a harmless free hobby and I am now the sole proprieter of my own business and have four book signings on the books. I have gone from riches to rags in three easy months! The fun is just beginning! And to top it all off, I thought I was finished with the saga with Second Time's a Charm, but Kyle and Chelsea are calling me to write their sequel! Who knows when I'll ever get to those baseboards in the bathroom. And who cares? Please don't judge too harshly when you visit and my house is a mess. As Katharine Hepburn once said, "You cahn't do it all!"

The print proof of the book came yesterday so I read it all and faxed in the proof approval last night at two am. Two-hundred copies are in the works right now. I will be looking for a box on my doorstep on July 7th! It takes nine hours to read The One. I have done it so many times already!

summertime happenings

Wow! It makes me hot just looking at that profile picture. It's 96 degrees in Greensboro right now on the second day of summer! Lots of book happenings to report. The print proof is on its way to me and I should receive it tomorrow. I should have my first run of books in about two weeks. The fourth of July was the original target date and it looks like we are right on schedule.

There is a book signing event planned in Greensboro for Thursday, July 29th at The Mix Martini Bar at Quaker Village from 6-9 pm. It's half-price wine night so bring your friends and buy an autographed copy or two (or three) of The One! Stay for dinner. I can promise you that the food is excellent!

If you plan to be at the Outer Banks on August 2, stop by Sam and Omie's Restaurant on the Beach Road in Nags Head from 3-5 pm for a signing event there! They have great food too, and the atmosphere is really cool. A trip to the OBX would never be complete without a visit to Sam and Omie's! A chapter of The One takes place there, and S & O's is mentioned, in case you were wondering...

The sequel to The One is finished as of this week. It is entitled, Second Time's a Charm, and is the story of the Outer Banks characters, Stacie and Tyson. It is an adult romance, so be ready for some heat...and lots of beach scenery, too. Unfortunately I have to sell enough copies of The One before I can start publishing this one, so tell your friends. The website will be up and running shortly so we will be ready for online orders soon.

Stay cool!

Writing The One has been an amazing journey so far. Writing it has been the most fun I have ever had. Letting others read it has been the most soul-baring experience I have had. Writing this book has only been about 5% of what is to happen next. As we prepare to release the first 100 copies in July of 2010, I hope you will help me spread the word about this story and see if people are as caught up in these characters as I have been over the last seven months.

The story has been kicking around in my head over the last thirty years. Thirty years ago I met someone like Kyle, who had experienced many of the same sad events. I couldn't help wondering, how does someone deal with all of that and move on? And someone should write a story about it! When I became an empty nester in August and was looking for a cheap hobby that I could do from home at any time of day, I sat down at the computer one evening and this story finally came tumbling out. Real-life experiences, anecdotes, places I love, people I'd met or knew well, and sayings poured themselves into what has become the first love story of Chelsea Davenport and Kyle Davis. There is no other place like the mountains of North Carolina and it has become the magical backdrop for the setting of The One.

There are many themes in this story; among them are family, hope and commitment, self-discovery, responsibilty, and perseverance. It also deals with suicide. I, like Kyle, have been forced to deal with suicide, although his account is quite different from my own. The way we dealt with it may have been the same, but the circumstances leading to the fictional one and the one in my own life were quite different. For both Kyle and myself, it took the love of those we hold dear to pull us out of the dark places and into the light again. Those people who loved us helped us heal and hold up our heads again and move on.

I hope that Kyle and Chelsea's story will strike a chord with women of all ages, whether looking back on their own first loves, or hoping to find this for themselves, or just living vicariously in the dream. It is a good dream...or maybe even a good memory!

Look for a book signing event in Greensboro in mid-July!
